Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime show stands among the very best in the history of the form. Racing ambitiously through the artist’s entire career, the show has put forward the artist’s qualities that just click. We feel between feeling deeply and being caught up in arch irony. Thus, it was overblown to the point that the camera did not know where to look. We have seen the artist in their purest wholeness. Indeed the show is perhaps the most honest and unalloyed expression of what Gaga’s fans admire so much about her.

Lady Gaga entered the Super Bowl as an act of a bit of a downturn. We all know her album Joanne has been met with reserved critical notice and no real hit single. However, she is never an overtly political performer, although she easily understood causes. Ultimately, we were left to argue that her lack of a statement was the statement. America’s problems are not Gaga’s to reconcile. She has every right to want Trump voters to buy “Bad Romance” on iTunes. 

Lady Gaga performs unbound by rules

Her performance commenced with “God Bless America”, followed by “This Land is Your Land”. We experience a pop star released from the usual rules of gravity, stadium safety and good sense. Indeed few singers would have been so bold to open the show as Gaga did with her aerial stunts. Similarly, few possessing a famous civil-rights anthem (Gaga performed the LGBT-equality song “Born This Way”) would have unleashed it as third in the setlist. In fact, we know both Katy Perry and Madonna saved their big statements for the show’s final moments. 

Gaga’s glorious return to the basics

We find back earnest fun and a much-needed escape from the tough existential realities. We see Lady Gaga studded with crystal sceptres for “Telephone” and, most pleasantly harkening back to the early days of her career, a key-tar: “Just Dance”. Indeed, the halftime show made us feel a Gaga was returning to the fundamentals. At its heart, pop music, as we all know, has a very primal appeal. It makes you dance. It makes you feel. We see the smartest Gaga stripping down her act to the basics. Indeed, even Beyonce, had she been present, might have dwindled the relatively humble intentions of the act.

All the time Gaga was performing, we were compelled not to even glance at our phone screens. In a final moment, we see Gaga walking into the crowd and hugging an audience member while crooning the word “Stay”. We may not know whether it was a reference to the refugee crisis and recent legislation or an everlasting moment of affection.
